More opportunities to have your say on plans for a new mental health hospital in York

Extra dates have been added to the planned, meaningful conversations with the local community to discuss plans for a new mental health hospital in York.

The consultation is currently underway and people across the Vale of York are being encouraged to share their views and help the local NHS deliver mental health care that is fit for the 21st century.

Dr Louise Barker, Clinical Lead for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities at NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “We want to commission innovative care and treatment that meets the needs of local stakeholders and aligns with what they have told us is important to them. The local community’s views on the location and the facility’s configuration are extremely important and we have received some incredibly valuable feedback so far.

“We have added extra dates and extended the consultation period, which now ends on 16 January 2017, to ensure that local service users, families, partners and staff have as many opportunities as possible to give their views on proposals and help us develop high quality mental health services for the Vale of York.”

The new events will be held in Pocklington, Selby, Tadcaster and Pickering, with events already set to take place in York and Easingwold in the next couple of weeks. Each of the events last for two hours and details of the proposals – including possible sites for the new hospital, as well as the proposed number and configuration of beds – will be presented to attendees before breaking off into smaller workshop groups to discuss and share views.

These events are being held in conjunction with Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) as the current provider of mental health services in the area.

Ruth Hill, Director of Operations at TEWV, said: “Most people want to receive the care they need at home and developing services that support service users in the community is a key priority for us.

“Alongside this we want to make sure that those people who need to spend time in hospital have access to modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

“The trust has some of the best inpatient facilities in the country and this is what we aspire to for people across the Vale of York.”
